Update: December 18, 2009 Most of the surgeries on all of the Medicine Hat cats have been done now. The cats are all recuperating well and many are now ready for adoption. It has been a long and expensive project for us but very worthwhile to see the amazing transformation that these cats have gone through since coming into our care. Only one of the cats ended up being pregnant and is due any day now. THANK YOU to everyone who donated to us to help care for these poor cats. Please check our website for the ones that are now available for adoption. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. If you wish to make a donation towards the continued care of these cats you can donate securely at www.canadahelps.org or contact us.
Update: November 16, 2009 A total of 101 cats were removed from a family’s Medicine Hat home between November 2nd -13th and went to several rescue groups across the province and Western Canada. Happy Cat Sanctuary took in 19 cats, the 2nd largest group of cats from this situation. Their conditions have been assessed and they are all being treated while they stay at the Sanctuary. Cats like Bruin and Flame will have surgery to remove damaged eyes because of infections and 5 others will need major dental work. We had to euthanize one of the cats as it had end stage lymphoma. A few cats – ranging in age from 6 months to 4 yrs are not as needy and will be looking for homes within the next few weeks. We are quite excited and one of the only rescues that has any cats that are pregnant. At this time we believe 3 of the females are expecting and the foster home that is caring for them is so excited. Many of these cats are believed to be of Himalayan, Siamese, Burmese and Exotic Short Hair breeds. The family involved with hoarding these cats has been cooperative with bylaw and the rescue societies involved in the removal of the cats. Happy Cat Sanctuary is in need of donations to help in the care of these cats. We have also rescued approximately 150 cats and kittens this past year from Strathmore and the surrounding areas. We are looking for everything from food, litter, blankets and of course financial donations to help pay for the cost of treating and caring for all our cats. In addition to cash donations, Happy Cat will be looking for foster homes and permanent homes for the cats in the next few weeks and months. Click HERE to see individual pictures of these cats. We recognize that many feel it would be less-expensive to euthanize these cats, but the veterinarians involved in treating the animals feel that with a little time, care and love, they have the opportunity for full, healthy and happy lives. We have had one person who has sponsored Koala Bear and is paying for her full dental work and hair cut (due to matt’s) which we are so grateful for. We have another person who has also paid for Sir Lancelot’s medical needs and has also applied to adopt him. If people wish to sponsor a cat or make a cash donation they can call us at 403-804-8571 or visit our website – we have set up an online fund for these particular cats through www.canadahelps.org so you can make a secure donation right online. If you wish to donate any items please contact us to arrange for a volunteer to pick up your donation or you can drop it off at The Red Carrot Gift & Clothing store on 3rd Ave. in Strathmore. Thank you all so much for your support to our cause.
